Weekend Trips from Madrid
Across this site I’ve argued that six places are too far to visit from Madrid in a day — Seville, Valencia, León, Burgos, Salamanca and Ribera del Duero. This is where they go. Each one becomes excellent the moment you add a single night, and the AVE makes a Saturday-to-Sunday genuinely easy.

The one I’d do first
Valencia. Under two hours each way, and it’s the only one that adds a beach. Saturday morning train, old town and the Mercado Central for lunch, City of Arts in the afternoon, dinner in El Cabanyal by the sea. Sunday: paella properly, at the coast, taking two hours over it, then an evening train home.
That itinerary is impossible as a day trip and straightforward as a weekend, which is the whole argument of this page in one example.
The one that changes most with a night
Seville. A day trip gets you the Alcázar and the cathedral and puts you back on a train before anything interesting happens. Seville is an evening city — the heat drops, the streets fill at ten, people eat outside. Everyone who has done both says the overnight is a different place.
Same logic for Salamanca: the Plaza Mayor lit after dark is the best thing in the city and day-trippers on the last train never see it.
How to make the maths work
- Book the early train out and the late one back. A 07:00 Saturday and a 21:00 Sunday buys you nearly two full days for one hotel night.
- One hotel night in a Spanish provincial city is cheap compared with what you’d spend on a second full day of train fares to the same place.
- Book the AVE early. Fares rise steeply close to the date and weekend trains sell out.
- Remember the 30-minute security rule at high-speed stations. It applies going both ways. More on that here.

What is the best weekend trip from Madrid?
Valencia — under two hours each way on the AVE, and the only option that adds a beach and a genuinely different food culture. Seville is the more spectacular city but it’s further and much hotter in summer.
Which cities are too far for a day trip from Madrid?
Seville, Valencia, León and Burgos, plus Salamanca and Ribera del Duero. Each needs three or more hours of travel each way once you count station time, which leaves too little of the day.
Is Seville worth an overnight from Madrid?
Very much so. A day trip gives you two monuments; a night gives you the evening, which is when Seville is actually Seville — streets filling at ten, dinner outside, the heat finally gone.
