Madrid to León by Train
León is about 2 hours 10 minutes from Madrid Chamartín — note the station, it isn’t Atocha — which puts it at the far edge of what a day allows. It has the best stained glass in Spain, a Romanesque royal pantheon people call the Sistine Chapel of its period, and a tapas culture where the food still comes free. Go for a night if you can.

Door to door
Three hours each way is the honest figure. This is where a day trip starts to stop making sense.
The cathedral, which is mostly window
León Cathedral holds around 1,800 square metres of medieval stained glass — more than almost any Gothic building in Europe, and proportionally so much that the walls are barely there. French Gothic in style rather than Spanish, built in the thirteenth century by masons who pushed the structure to the point where later centuries had to spend enormous effort stopping it falling down.
Go late in the day. The west rose window catches the afternoon sun and the whole interior turns colour. It’s the single best hour in the city and it’s free to walk in and look up.
San Isidoro, and the Romanesque ceiling
The Royal Pantheon of San Isidoro is a low, squat crypt where the kings of León are buried, and its vaults are covered in twelfth-century frescoes that have never been repainted — the colours are original. It gets called the Sistine Chapel of Romanesque art, which is the kind of claim that usually disappoints and here doesn’t.
There’s also a Gaudí: the Casa Botines, one of only three buildings he built outside Catalonia, now a museum. It’s neo-Gothic and comparatively restrained, which is itself interesting if you know his later work.
The tapas are free, properly free
León’s Barrio Húmedo operates the old system: order a drink, get a plate of food with it, no charge and no choosing. Move to the next bar, get something different. It’s one of the last cities in Spain where this is standard rather than a novelty, and locals eat this way rather than sitting down to dinner.

Is León worth a day trip from Madrid?
It’s at the limit. Three hours each way leaves you six or seven in the city, which covers the cathedral, San Isidoro and a tapas crawl. If you can spare a night, León is considerably better as an overnight.
Does León still have free tapas?
Yes, and properly — order a drink in the Barrio Húmedo and a plate of food arrives with it at no charge. It’s one of the last Spanish cities where this is the normal way to eat rather than a marketing gimmick.
