Madrid to Burgos by Train
Burgos is about 1 hour 45 minutes from Madrid Chamartín — not Atocha — with the first train at 07:15. It has one of the three great Gothic cathedrals of Spain, El Cid’s tomb inside it, and a museum built around the oldest human remains in Europe. It’s a workable day if you take the first train.

Door to door
Check which Madrid station you’re leaving from. Burgos goes from Chamartín, and that catches people out.
The cathedral
Begun in 1221, French Gothic, UNESCO-listed on its own rather than as part of a district — which only three Spanish cathedrals manage. The openwork spires are the thing you see first, and inside there’s the Golden Staircase, the Constables’ Chapel and a sixteenth-century flycatcher clock — a figure that opens its mouth on the hour and has been doing so for four hundred years.
El Cid is buried beneath the crossing, with his wife Jimena. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was born a few kilometres from here, and the city has claimed him ever since — there’s an equestrian statue by the river and a bridge named after him.
The museum that surprises people
Thirty minutes east of Burgos is Atapuerca, where excavations have produced the oldest hominin remains in Europe — over a million years old — and a new species, Homo antecessor. The Museum of Human Evolution in Burgos itself is where the finds are displayed, and it is a genuinely excellent modern museum: three floors, well-lit, and much better than the phrase “archaeology museum” suggests.
If you have any interest in prehistory, this rather than the cathedral is the reason to come.
The food
Morcilla de Burgos — blood sausage made with rice, which gives it a texture nothing like the northern European version — and lechazo, milk-fed roast lamb. Burgos is also the source of a mild fresh cheese sold everywhere in Spain under the city’s name.
