Castile is named after its castles, and there are more within two hours of Madrid than you can do in a week. These are the seven worth the drive, ranked honestly — including the one that probably inspired Disney, the one you can sleep in, and the one that’s a forty-five minute drive and still the most dramatic of the lot.

The one everyone comes for
The Alcázar of Segovia is the castle people mean when they say Spain has fairy-tale castles: a stone ship on a rock spur where two rivers meet, with turrets and slate spires. The Disney connection is repeated everywhere and is not documented, but the resemblance is genuine and the setting does most of the work.
Inside is a nineteenth-century recreation after a fire, but the painted ceilings and the fifty-two carved kings of the Hall of Kings justify the ticket. The tower is 152 steps and gives you the best view in Segovia.
The one that’s closest and most dramatic
The Castillo de los Mendoza is 45 minutes from Madrid and it’s the best-preserved castle in the region — built in 1475, restored properly, walls and towers you can walk. What makes it is the setting: the castle in front, the Santillana reservoir behind, and the grey granite wall of La Pedriza rising beyond that.
If you’re hiring a car for a single day, this is the highest return on the shortest drive.
The one you can sleep in
The castle at Sigüenza is a twelfth-century fortress that has been bishop’s palace, prison and barracks and is now a parador — a state-run hotel in a historic building. You don’t have to stay to look around the courtyard or have a drink on the terrace, but you can.
The honest caveat about the Alcázar of Toledo
It dominates the Toledo skyline and it’s the first thing you see arriving. It’s also been rebuilt so many times — most recently after the 1936 siege reduced it to rubble — that the building is essentially modern. Go for the excavated Roman and Moorish foundations in the basement and the arms collection, not for medieval atmosphere. More here.
