Manzanares el Real and the Castle of the Mendoza
Forty-five minutes from Madrid there’s a fifteenth-century castle sitting above a reservoir with a granite mountain range behind it — the best-preserved castle in the Madrid region, and one most visitors to the city never hear about. Behind it rises La Pedriza, a chaos of weathered granite that’s the best walking within an hour of the capital.

The castle
Built in 1475 for the Mendoza family, and unusual in that it was designed as a residence as much as a fortress — the decorative gallery running along the upper floor is Gothic ornament rather than defence. It has been restored properly and you can walk the walls and towers.
What makes it photograph so well is the setting: the castle in the foreground, the Santillana reservoir behind it, and the grey granite wall of La Pedriza rising beyond that. It’s the most dramatic thing in the Community of Madrid and it’s a 45-minute drive from the city.
La Pedriza
Immediately behind the village, part of the Sierra de Guadarrama national park. La Pedriza is a huge expanse of eroded granite — domes, slabs and boulders piled into shapes that look deliberately arranged. It’s the main rock-climbing area near Madrid and it’s laced with waymarked walking routes from thirty minutes to a full day.
Access is by a single road from Manzanares el Real, and on busy days a vehicle quota applies. Arrive early.
