Beaches Near Madrid
Madrid is the furthest capital in Europe from the sea — about 300 km in every direction — so there is no beach day trip. What there is: river pools in the mountains an hour away, a reservoir with a sandy shore, and a two-hour train to actual Mediterranean sand if you’re prepared to make a night of it. Here’s each option, honestly.

The honest answer
There is no beach near Madrid. If a page tells you otherwise it’s stretching the definition past breaking point. Madrid sits in the middle of the Iberian plateau and every coast is roughly 300 km away.
What Madrid does have, and what locals actually do in August, is swim in the mountains. The Sierra de Guadarrama has river pools and reservoirs an hour from the city, they’re free or nearly free, and the water comes off snowmelt.
Las Presillas, Rascafría
Natural pools on the Lozoya river, lightly dammed to make them deep enough to swim, with grass and trees around them. About an hour and a quarter by car. On a July weekend it’s full of Madrid families; midweek in June it’s nearly empty.

The reservoirs
Several of the Sierra reservoirs have designated swimming areas with sand or grass shores. San Juan, west of Madrid near San Martín de Valdeiglesias, is the biggest and the one that gets called “Madrid’s beach” — it allows motorboats and has proper beach areas. Santillana, below the castle at Manzanares el Real, is more scenic but swimming is restricted in places.
Check current rules before going: reservoir swimming is regulated and areas open and close by season and water level.
Actual sea, if you’ll make a night of it
Valencia is the closest coast at about 1 h 50 on the AVE, and the beach is reachable by tram from the centre. As a day trip it doesn’t work — you’d spend six hours travelling for a few on the sand — but as a Saturday-to-Sunday it’s the easiest sea escape from Madrid, and you get paella at the beach where it’s supposed to be eaten.
Alicante, Málaga and San Sebastián are all further and all better as proper trips.
