Hiking in the Sierra de Guadarrama

Madrid has a national park an hour from the city — a granite range rising to 2,428 m, with beech woods, glacial cirques and walking from gentle river paths to serious all-day ridges. Most visitors to Madrid never learn it’s there, which is why on a Tuesday in June you can walk for two hours and see four people.

Four areas, four different days

La Pedriza — granite chaos

Above Manzanares el Real, 45 minutes from Madrid. A huge area of eroded granite domes and boulders, the main climbing ground near the city, with waymarked walks from thirty minutes to a full day. Vehicle quotas apply on busy days — arrive early.

Peñalara — the high one

The highest peak in the range at 2,428 m, reached from the Puerto de Cotos. The circuit past the glacial lagoons is the classic day walk here: four to five hours, a real climb, and above the treeline for much of it. Snow lies late.

Valle de la Fuenfría — the gentle one

Above Cercedilla, and the only part of the park you can reach easily by train — Cercanías line C-8 goes to Cercedilla and the trails start from the station. Pine forest, a Roman road, and a network of well-signed walks graded by difficulty. This is where to go with children or without a car.

The Lozoya valley — woods and water

Around Rascafría, on the northern side. Beech woods, a monastery, the waterfall walk and river pools to swim in. The most rewarding in late October when the beeches turn.

How long is each walk?

Rough round-trip times at a normal walking pace, including stops. Tick a few and see what makes a day.

Without a car

One option, and it’s a good one: Cercanías C-8 to Cercedilla. The trails in the Fuenfría valley start within walking distance of the station, it takes about an hour and a quarter from Madrid, and it costs a couple of euros. If you want a mountain day and you’re not hiring a car, this is the answer.

Everything else in the range — La Pedriza, Peñalara, the Lozoya valley — needs driving.

Getting to the trailheads

A car opens up the whole range and lets you drive the passes, which are worth doing in their own right. Without one you’re limited to Cercedilla — which is still a proper day in the mountains.

Sierra de Guadarrama questions

Can you go hiking near Madrid without a car?

Peñalara, at 2,428 m, in the Sierra de Guadarrama. The circuit past its glacial lagoons from the Puerto de Cotos is the classic day walk in the range, at four to five hours.

Is there a national park near Madrid?

Yes — the Sierra de Guadarrama has been a national park since 2013 and starts about 45 minutes from the city. Most visitors to Madrid have no idea it’s there.

When is the best time to hike near Madrid?

Late spring and autumn. Summer is hot at lower altitudes though fine high up, and the range holds snow into spring — check conditions rather than assuming Spain means warm.
