Pedraza
Pedraza is a walled village in Segovia province with one gate — the only way in or out, then and now. Inside are cobbled streets, a arcaded Plaza Mayor and a castle Ignacio Zuloaga once owned. It’s 130 km from Madrid, there’s no public transport worth the name, and that combination has kept it almost exactly as it was.

One gate, and what that means
Most walled towns eventually punched extra openings through for traffic. Pedraza never did. The Puerta de la Villa is still the only entrance, which is why the village inside feels sealed off in a way that Ávila, for all its complete walls, does not.
The Plaza Mayor is irregular and arcaded, ringed with stone columns of mismatched heights, and it functions the way these squares did before tourism: as the place everything happens. The castle at the far end was bought in 1926 by the painter Ignacio Zuloaga, who used it as a studio; part of it is now a museum of his work.
The candle night
Two Saturdays each July, Pedraza turns off its electric lights and lights the whole village with 35,000 candles for the Concierto de las Velas — a classical concert in the plaza. Tickets sell out and the village fills completely, but it is the single most striking evening within two hours of Madrid.
Pedraza and Segovia in one day
Pedraza alone is three hours. Most people pair it with Segovia, 37 km down the road — this works out whether that fits.
Lunch
Pedraza is a lechazo village — milk-fed lamb roasted in wood ovens, the same tradition as Segovia’s suckling pig and taken just as seriously. Several restaurants around the plaza have been doing it for generations, and at weekends they fill with people who have driven up from Madrid for exactly this. Book.
Getting here
There’s no useful bus. The drive is 90 minutes up the A-1 and across, and it’s a good one — the last stretch crosses open Castilian plateau with the Guadarrama behind you.
