The Lavender Fields of Brihuega
For about three weeks in July, a thousand hectares of lavender flower around Brihuega, an hour and a half east of Madrid, and the hills turn purple. The rest of the year it’s a pleasant Guadalajara town with a medieval core. This is the most seasonal trip on the site — get the timing wrong and there is genuinely nothing to see.

Getting the timing right
This is the whole trip. The lavender flowers for roughly three weeks in July and the exact window moves each year depending on rainfall and spring temperatures. Some years it peaks in the first week, some years the third.
The town publishes updates as the season approaches, and there’s a lavender festival with evening concerts held among the fields. Those nights sell out and the roads fill; if you want the fields quiet, go on a weekday morning instead.
Go early or go late
Midday in July in Guadalajara is 35°C and flat light. The fields photograph properly at sunrise or in the last hour before sunset, when the rows go gold at the edges. It’s also when the smell is strongest — the heat lifts the oil out of the flowers, and standing in a lavender field at seven in the evening is a genuinely sensory thing rather than just a photograph.
The town, which is worth an hour
Brihuega itself is medieval, walled in part, and has a set of Arab caves cut under the town — a network of tunnels used for storage and refuge, open to visitors. There’s also a former royal cloth factory with a circular garden, which is where the lavender association began.
If you’re driving 90 km, give the town an hour rather than photographing a field and turning round.
Plan around the light
The fields are best at either end of the day. This is one trip where leaving Madrid at nine is the wrong call.
