Car Rental at Madrid Airport
Hiring at Barajas costs more than hiring in the city, and it’s usually worth it anyway: you’re on a motorway within two minutes and you never have to drive through central Madrid. All the desks sit in one building connected to the terminals by shuttle, which is the part nobody explains before you land.

How pick-up actually works at Barajas
The thing to know before you land: the rental desks are not in the terminals. There’s a dedicated car hire building, and you reach it by a free shuttle bus from arrivals. Signs say “Car Rental” or “Alquiler de coches” — follow them to the bus stop rather than looking for a desk in the hall.
Allow 45 minutes from clearing customs to actually driving away, more in August. If you’ve landed at T4 or T4S, which are separate from the main cluster, add fifteen minutes.
Is the surcharge worth it?
Usually yes, and the reason is geography rather than money. Barajas sits north-east of Madrid with direct access to the M-11, A-1 and A-2. You leave the airport and you’re on a motorway heading out of the region without ever touching the city.
Picking up in the centre means starting your drive on the M-30 ring road in traffic, and it means being inside the low-emission zone with a car you can’t legally drive there without authorisation. For the sake of ten or twenty per cent, the airport removes both problems.

Airport rates are set slightly higher here to reflect the surcharge. Fuel and parking are where budgets usually go wrong.
Returning the car
Give yourself an hour before check-in opens. You return to the same car hire building, then take the shuttle back to your terminal — that shuttle is the part people forget, and it runs on its own schedule rather than yours.
Fill up before you arrive. The petrol stations closest to the airport charge airport prices, and the ones on the A-2 a few kilometres out don’t.

Rates at Barajas swing hard with season. Booking two to three weeks ahead is usually the sweet spot, and it’s the only reliable way to get an automatic.
